How to Reset a Cisco Phone by Power Cycling

Overview

If you are experiencing issues with your Cisco Desk Phone, a simple reset by power cycling (unplugging and reconnecting the network cable) can often resolve common problems such as connectivity issues, frozen screens, or unresponsive buttons.

Steps to Reset the Cisco CP-8851 Phone

Step 1: Locate the Network Cable

  • The network cable (Ethernet cable) is connected to the back of the phone.

  • It is typically plugged into the port labeled with a network symbol

Step 2: Unplug the Network Cable

  • Gently remove the network cable from the back of the phone.

  • Wait 10–15 seconds before proceeding to allow the device to fully power down.

Step 3: Reconnect the Network Cable

  • Plug the network cable back into the same port on the phone.

  • The phone will automatically power on and go through its boot-up sequence.

Step 4: Wait for the Phone to Restart

  • The phone screen will display the Cisco logo and begin reloading.

  • Allow 2–5 minutes for the phone to fully reboot and reconnect to the network.

Troubleshooting

  • If the phone does not turn back on, verify that the network cable is securely connected.
