How to Refill the Bottom 8.5x11 Drawer on a Toshiba Printer

Overview

If the Toshiba printer indicates that the bottom 8.5x11 paper drawer is empty, it require a specific loading process to properly recognize the paper. This guide walks you through the correct method, including handling the separate right-side section of the drawer.

Steps to Refill the Bottom 8.5x11 Paper Drawer

Step 1: Open the Bottom Drawer

  1. Locate and fully pull out the bottom drawer of the printer. The drawer is separated into two trays, a left and right tray.

  2. The right tray should be empty, gently closed this side only.

    • The Printer will make some noise after the right tray is closed.

Step 2: Load Paper

  1. With the right tray closed, load a stack of 8.5x11 paper into the left side only.

  2. Fill the paper up to, but not past, the Max Fill line marked inside the drawer.

    • If the paper is too low it will not recognize the paper.

  3. Close the drawer and wait for the printer to engage and slide the paper over to the right side automatically.

  4. Once the printer finishes making noise, reopen the drawer, only the left side should open and now be empty.

  5. Refill the left side again with more paper (still up to the Max Fill line).

  6. Close the drawer.

Step 3: Confirm Paper Detection

  • Check the printer’s display to confirm the paper is now detected and the drawer is no longer marked as empty.

    • Any released print jobs will automatically resume.

If the Drawer Still Shows Empty:

  1. Open the bottom drawer again. You may have to pull the right tray out separately.

  2. Remove all paper from both the left and right sections.

  3. Close the drawer completely, and wait for the printer to stop making noise.

  4. Return to Step 1 and repeat the process carefully.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Use flat, undamaged paper, wrinkled or curled sheets can prevent detection.

  • Ensure the paper guides are not too tight and the paper stack is aligned properly.

  • Ensure both sides of the drawer are fully closed.

  • The left tray can be filled at any time, as the printer pulls from the right side, and slides the paper over when the right side is empty.

    • If you open the drawer and only the left tray pulls out most likely there is still paper in the right side.
