Remote Desktop: Using Windows Remote Desktop on a Chromebook

Follow these steps to set up and use Windows Remote Desktop on your Chromebook, including connecting to your UB computer remotely via VPN when off-campus.

1. Download and Install the Remote Desktop Client (First Time Only)

  1. Open the Play Store application on your Chromebook.

  2. In the Search box, type Microsoft Remote Desktop.

  3. Click Install.

  4. Click Confirm to complete the installation.

2. Create a Secure Connection to the Internet (Off-Campus Only)

To connect to your UB computer from off-campus, you'll need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network).

  1. Download and Install Cisco Secure Client:

    • Open the Play Store and search for Cisco Secure Client (UB VPN).

    • Click Install and then run the Cisco Secure Client once installed.

  2. Connect to the UB VPN:

    • Open Cisco Secure Client and connect using your UB credentials.

    • Follow the on-screen prompts to establish the VPN connection.

3. Connect to Your UB Computer via Remote Desktop

  1. Open the Remote Desktop Client:

    • Go to Applications and select RD Client.

  2. Add a New Remote Desktop Connection:

    • Click the “+” icon in the top right corner of the RD Client screen.

    • Select Desktop from the menu.

  3. Enter Your Computer Name:

    • In the field provided, enter your computer name in the format:
      SONXXX.nurse.buffalo.edu (where “XXX” is the specific number for your computer).

    • Click Next.

  4. Enter Your UB Credentials:

    • In the User name field, type ad\ followed by your UBITName (e.g., ad\jdoe).

    • In the Password field, enter your UBIT Password.

  5. Save the Connection:

    • Click Save to store your credentials.

  6. Final Save:

    • The account you just entered should now appear in the User name field.

    • Click Save again to finalize the connection setup.

Additional Notes:

  • Once the setup is complete, you can simply select your saved connection in the Remote Desktop Client to quickly connect to your UB computer from your Chromebook.
